NORTH AMERICAN TOUR BEGINS TOMORROW

A MAN ALIVE OUT NOW ON RIBBON MUSIC, RECEIVES CRITICAL ACCLAIM FROM NPR, PBS “NEWSHOUR,” PITCHFORK, SALON, STEREOGUM AND MORE

Thao Nguyen, singer, songwriter and frontwoman of critically-acclaimed San Francisco-based band Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, stars alongside collaborator and friend Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs) in a parody of The New York Times’ recent Justin Bieber/Diplo/Skrillex video piece. The video finds Nguyen and Garbus breaking down the creative process behind the Thao & the Get Down Stay Down track “Astonished Man.” The video is premiering now at Funny Or Die and can be viewed/shared HERE.

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down’s new full-length record, A Man Alive, is out now on Ribbon Music. The album continues to receive extensive critical praise; it was recently featured on PBS “Newshour,” and the press has said:

“[A Man Alive is a] brilliant, jarring new album…[Nguyen’s] most rewarding work yet.” –NPR "First Listen"

“The playful melodies that Thao is known for are still there but matched with a gnarled sound that is classic [producer Merrill] Garbus.” –NPR "All Songs Considered"

“a deeply personal musical exploration” ––NPR "All Things Considered"

“Nguyen’s most rhythmically robust, gleefully discordant release to date. 8.0/10” ––Pitchfork

“The beats and bass are the sonic spine to an album that’s deeply personal and vulnerable.” –Salon

“explosive and melodically dense” –Stereogum

“the most deeply introspective, experimental and well-formed release from Thao yet…9.4/10” –Paste

“Nguyen sounds like she’s having more fun than ever before.” –Consequence Of Sound

To celebrate the release, the band will tour the U.S. throughout the spring. Tickets are available at www.thaoandthegetdownstaydown.com and upcoming shows are listed below.

A Man Alive was recorded at Tiny Telephone Studios in San Francisco and was produced by Garbus. The two, close personal friends, experimented extensively during the creation of the record resulting in a unique, new sound for Nguyen.

“With this record I had clearer vision and aspirations. I wanted emotion. I wanted power. I wanted A Man Alive to be beat- and bass-driven,” says Nguyen of the album. “A Man Alive is more instrumental, more riff- and loop-centric, and has more manipulated sounds.”

The new album also finds Nguyen exploring previously untouched subjects including her relationship with her father, who left the family when she was a young girl. “The record is essentially about my relationship with my dad, its trajectory,” Nguyen says. “It’s a document of my life in conjunction with his, even though we’ve always been leading our lives away from each other. Some are optimistic and forgiving, some are the opposite.”

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down’s 2013 album We The Common was released to widespread critical acclaim; Pitchfork declared it Nguyen’s “most sharply written record to date” while NPR called her “one of the most commanding and distinctive young singers around.”
