Arthur King Presents: Jason Lytle NYLONANDJUNO is out today via Dangerbird Records; listen/stream HERE. The LP is the next installment in the ongoing experimental album release series from Los Angeles-based music and art collective, Arthur King.

The accompanying film of the same name was created by Mind Palace, writer/director Ryan Baxley, set designer Brandon Schwartzel, and photographer Alice Baxley. Their film for NYLONANDJUNO was inspired by Lytle’s descriptions of each individual song, recreated in handmade and hand painted miniatures. Materials used include clay, paper mache, and sand.

NYLONANDJUNO is an experimental album which finds Lytle entering new territory. He describes the minimalist compositional process as “oddly refreshing.” The record was created exclusively from one analog synthesizer and one nylon-string acoustic guitar. “I wondered how working within these limitations would end up,” Lytle explains.

“Turns out it was a pretty fulfilling exercise just concentrating on going deep and trying to achieve certain feelings based on the song titles and subject matter I was chasing.”

Paste calls NYLONANDJUNO “lilting, dioramic songs both panoramic and personal;” read the piece and watch the video for “Don’t Wanna Be There For All That StuffHERE.

Arthur King’s installation at 98 Orchard Gallery in New York City is on display now through August 21. There is an interactive Arthur King Changing Landscapes (Wauters Farm) installation (a film which will be premiered at Sao Paulo Short Film Festival), along with the music and visual art created for two of our Arthur King Presents releases: Jason Lytle NYLONANDJUNO (film by Mind Palace) and Randy Randall Sound Field Volume One (visuals by Aaron Farley).

Multi-instrumentalist and producer Jason Lytle is best known for his work as the founding member and primary songwriter of acclaimed indie rock band Grandaddy. Following the group’s split in 2006, Lytle created music for national and international commercials and released his debut solo album, Yours Truly, The Commuter, in 2009, followed by Dept. of Disappearance in 2012. NPR Music calls Yours Truly, The Commuter “one of the year’s best albums,” and Pitchfork says “his songs work because they are deeply sincere, and that sincerity makes them sound all the more awestruck and imaginative.”

Lytle has also played in bands including Admiral Radley (with Aaron Espinoza of Earlimart and Arthur King) and BNQT (featuring members of Franz Ferdinand, Grandaddy, Band of Horses and Midlake). Lytle has also collaborated with Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse (for the Dark Night of the Soul album), M. Ward, The Crystal Method and Giant Sand.

Changing Landscapes is an ongoing series in which Arthur King captures sounds and images from a specific environment via field recordings and uses the material to create live improvised performances in the same setting. They aim to encourage a deeper consciousness of the environment and our place within it through music and film. This entire process is recorded live, filmed, and released as a multi-media album via Dangerbird Records. Previous installment locations include the Grand Escalante Staircase in Utah, the deck of a catamaran in the Pacific Ocean and the Trona Pinnacles near Death Valley.

Unknown Movie Night is a series in which Arthur King invites an audience to attend a movie screening with a live score. Neither the band nor the audience knows what film will play ahead of time, and the band improvises a live score from beginning to end. Audio is recorded and released via Dangerbird Records. Previous films have included Darren Aronofsky’s Pi, Pixar’s Wall-E, Planet of the Apes, Edward Scissorhands, Delicatessen and Jurassic Park.
