Sundays with Sofia returns on Sunday, June 14, where Sofia Coppola will screen Goodfellas with a talkback featuring the film’s Michael Imperioli to follow.
This Juneteenth (Friday, June 19), the Brooklyn-born artist's collective The Circle will celebrate their two-year anniversary with an improvised, genre-defying performance at the Cherry Lane. Rooted in improvisation, collaboration and community, The Circle blends R&B, Hip Hop, Gospel, Rock, Folk and Jazz to create spontaneous, genre-defying performances that capture the raw energy of the city’s underground scene. For this performance, the artists will generate music from a randomly selected prompt, commencing an immersive songwriting experience in real-time. This ever-expanding network of musicians, singers, poets and creatives has been acclaimed by outlets including The New York Times, NPR’s Tiny Desk, COLORS, Okayplayer, and The FADER.
Celebrating the Midsommar holiday on Saturday, June 20, the theatre will be hosting a special screening of the director’s cut of the critically-acclaimed A24 film.
Later this summer, Cherry Lane will present the North American debut of Shifters, the critically acclaimed play by Olivier Award-nominated writer Benedict Lombe. The play will star Heather Agyepong (The Power, School Girls; or The African Mean Girls Play), who will reprise her role as “Des,” which received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress. She is joined by Daniel Ezra (Netflix’s All American, The Running Man), who takes on the role of “Dre”. The production is directed by BAFTA-nominated and Evening Standard Theatre Award-winner Lynette Linton (The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Not Your Superwoman). Previews start on July 6 with opening night on July 15.
Last week, the theatre partnered with McNally Jackson Books to host its inaugural BOOKTALK event with author Madeline Cash and singer-songwriter Audrey Hobert for a discussion on girlhood, beauty, humor, their artistic process and the enduring influence of one of their shared favorite films: The Virgin Suicides. This ongoing series pairs an author with an artist who inspires them for a live conversation about creativity, influence, and the ideas that shape their work. All BOOKTALK events will live on Cherry Lane’s YouTube channel.
The theatre recently wrapped its latest long-run programming, You Got Older, the Off-Broadway return of the Obie Award-winning play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Clare Barron and directed by Tony Award nominee and Obie Award winner Anne Kauffman. The show was extended three times due to popular demand and opened to instant praise from The New York Times—who named it a Critic’s Pick—The New Yorker, New York Magazine, Time Out NY, Theatermania and more.
