May 3, 2024—Rising singer-songwriter Medium Build is teaming with indie artist Holly Humberstone for a new version of her song “Cocoon.” Listen/share the track HERE.
“Holly’s writing always makes the most benign things feel devastating,” notes Medium Build, a.k.a. singer/songwriter Nick Carpenter. “I love how she paints with her words and ‘Cocoon’ is no different. ‘Now I’ve become a taxidermy version of myself’ is such a fucking sick line and I get to sing it!!! Dream come true.”
Humberstone adds, “I first discovered Medium Build about a year ago whilst I was touring in the states. My tour manager Carl put on a song of his whilst we drove north up the Pacific Coast Highway and something about his intimate songwriting style and the beautiful scenery just felt very poignant and hit me in a different way. I felt like I understood him a bit and immediately reached out and asked him if he wanted to collaborate. I sent him my song ‘Cocoon’ and although the lyrics were already written, he turned the second verse into a story of his own. His delivery of the words transformed the song into something that felt really magical and so I’ve decided to release our version.
“Nick (Medium Build) later came to open for my U.K. & E.U. tour earlier this year and we performed it together during my show every night. He became such a great friend of mine which is why this version of ‘Cocoon’ is very special to me. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!”
Earlier this year, Medium Build opened for Humberstone on her biggest U.K. and European headline tour to date.
The collaboration with Humberstone comes on the heels of Medium Build’s acclaimed debut album Country, out now on slowplay/Island Records. Listen to the album HERE and watch/share the official video for the album track “” HERE.
The album was recorded on Nashville’s Music Row by Medium Build alongside creative partner Laiko, where the two experimented with genre and style. “We made the album we wanted to make,” Nick says. “It’s so easy to get back in touch with yourself if you can throw off the heavy cloak of duty and just do something that feels good.”
Identifying as queer, Nick draws inspiration from his own exploration of sexual identity and sonically blends classic country, ’80s new wave and ’90s rap and hip-hop.
Medium Build is set to embark on a North American headline tour in support of the new music beginning May 14 in St. Louis and making stops in Denver, Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Boston, Toronto, New York City, Washington D.C. and more, with a number of the dates already sold-out. He is also set to play at Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza; see below for a complete list of dates.
